TOP CHRISTMAS WALKS IN WALES

MountainIt’s one of those crisp, fresh Christmas afternoons but you’re stuck indoors thinking up new ways of using up the remains of the turkey. Tensions are rising. On the TV there are re-runs of Only Fools and Horses, the kids are fighting over whose turn it is next on the X Box and Grandma’s just nodded off in the armchair. Ah the joys of Christmas!

But there is an alternative to spending the entire Christmas period stagnating indoors. Make the most of your time off work, round up the family, wrap up warm and combat the excesses with an invigorating winter walk.

The Sports Council for Wales have rounded up the best walks in Wales, from mountains to vales, and cliff paths to castles.

Providing you’re prepared for the weather and its changeable nature, there’s no reason not to venture out. Wear several layers of clothing to keep warmer dry air trapped close to the skin along with a hat, gloves and an extra pair of socks. It’s also important to stay hydrated. Even though you don’t sweat as much in cold weather you’re still losing fluids.

If you’re heading for Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons you’ll find daily weather forecasts at www.metoffice.com/loutdoor/mountainsafety, which will give you a heads up on the weather conditions.
