7 Apr 2009

A media, marketing and research specialist, formerly responsible for the public profile of Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, has been appointed to power the image of the Sports Council for Wales (SCW).

Sian Thomas joins SCW - the organisation responsible for developing and promoting sport and physical recreation - in the brand new role of Head of Communications.

In line with SCW’s contribution to the Welsh Assembly Government’s One Wales commitments, she will be responsible for providing strategic leadership for external and internal communications.

Overseeing the management of Marketing and Communications as well as the Research and Evaluation department, she has been tasked with strengthening working relationships with key stakeholders such as the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG), local authorities, governing bodies of sport and other Assembly Government Sponsored Bodies.

SCW Chair Philip Carling explained, "Sian’s vast experience will help put sport and physical recreation to the top of the agenda. Her understanding of marketing and research will be an enormous asset in terms of understanding the needs of our stakeholders and in the realisation of an ambitious, long-term strategic vision which outlines how the organisation will contribute to the One Wales government."

Her previous role involved the launch of a new brand identity, the development of an audience development strategy and the coordination of an international PR campaign to support the tour of key artworks from National Museum Cardiff to five venues in the US.

She also advised WAG on marketing communications to support the development of an ambitious online 'national collections' portal.

Sian explained, "I’m joining a strong team and an energetic organisation which is close to the issues that really matter to communities right across Wales. Certainly, SCW is gaining in momentum and I look forward to working with a wide range of partners in raising the profile of sport and physical recreation."

An International Politics graduate, Siân worked in a PR and public affairs capacity for a range of public sector organisations before undertaking a senior marketing role at one of Wales' largest further education colleges.

She has a Masters degree in Marketing, achieved Chartered Marketer status in 2005 and is a board member of the CIM in Wales and arts marketing agency Audiences Wales.
