Mums take to netball in Blaenau Gwent
Tredegar mothers who kept their children company by joining in with netball practice have ended up becoming regular players.
Taking part in warm-up sessions gave them the confidence to get active, and the Tredegar Junior Netball Club Mums & Kids Fit Sessions soon became a regular event.
The Sports Council helped the club increase participation with a Community Chest grant, covering basic equipment and coaching costs to teach players basic ball skills.
Project partners Tredegar Sports Centre, Blaenau Gwent Sports Development and Tredegar Ladies Netball Team responded with additional equipment - including netballs, sponge balls, inflatable netball posts, hula hoops, bean bags and skipping ropes.
Following the project’s initial success, Community Chest helped the scheme expand by purchasing extra equipment for 40 young people.
Parents have now become so involved, they’re expressing an interest in helping to coach. So the Sports Council is responding once again – this time with a grant to cover the parents’ training for coaching awards.
