Taking some Salsa steps to fintess
Organisers of the Octopus Project in Ystradgynlais knew that dance classes can be a fun, sociable and accessible way to encourage physical activity.
By planning a regular salsa class, Octopus aimed to reach people who didn’t normally engage in exercise. The sessions would be targeted primarily at people living on the estate where the project is based, though people in the
wider community were also welcomed through a widespread advertising campaign.
The Sports Council helped the Powys centre kick-start their initiative with a Community Chest grant of £610.
The funding allowed Octopus to cover a series of 12 salsa sessions led by two professional dance teachers. Organisers also provided free crèche services during session times, removing one of the most common barriers to physical activity.
The classes have been useful in attracting new people to the project, and are now being used to actively promote other activities and services. As well as improving their health and well-being, participants are developing their social skills while raising confidence and self esteem.
