Youth Club gives more choice for fitness
Coastlands Family Church in Barry was already providing a valuable service to local young people, with its weekly youth club hosting a wealth of indoor activities.
But the Church realised there was still scope for more good work in the community. Many local young people were overlooking physical activity altogether - and even existing participants were showing room for improvement.
The Church saw that extra activity sessions could initiate the change, with activities moving outdoors to extend the range of appeal.
With this goal in sight, the Church approached the Sports Council for advice and funding support. A Community Chest grant of £700 helped cover new sports equipment and volunteer training, allowing the Church to offer basketball, football and netball – all under skilled supervision.
As participation grows, the Church hopes to further improve the experience for its active youngsters - this time by entering teams into tournaments, where they can pit their skills against other youth clubs.
