A new project is helping to alleviate crime in the Vale of Glamorgan by engaging young offenders in football training.

Addressing a need to increase the number of leisure activities for young people in the region, the Vale of Glamorgan Youth Offending Team are holding weekly training sessions for 15 young offenders aged between 15-17 years.

The project has received a cash influx of £750 from the Sports Council for Wales’ Community Chest scheme, and will enable youth offending teams to engage with the youngsters in constructive physical activity.

It is another project to show that physical activity is not just a vehicle for health and fitness but can also provide critical pathways for people of all ages and walks of life to develop skills and build important social relations.

Weekly training sessions will be incorporated with games twice a month, not only encouraging participants to improve their overall health and fitness, but helping to raise self-esteem and develop essential teamwork skills.

The Vale of Glamorgan Youth Offending Team will work in partnership with local police forces and social services, using the grant to fund football equipment, first aid and coaching courses.
