Family CyclingThe Sports Council for Wales today welcomed the announcement that the Welsh Assembly Government is set to release an additional £4m into its ongoing quest to improve the health of the nation.

The Sports Council for Wales has been charged with the distribution of the funds to suitable projects across the length and breadth of the country in 2006/2007, by helping to provide the opportunities needed to encourage more people to take part in 30 minutes of physical activity, five times a week.

Chair of the Sports Council for Wales, Philip Carling has welcomed the announcement:

"The Welsh Assembly Government has again led the way in the quest to improve physical activity and people’s wellbeing through the ‘Climbing Higher’ initiative.

"We wholeheartedly welcome the significant commitment shown by the Assembly and will make every effort to ensure that this investment is used to further enhance our own efforts in increasing participation in physical activity in Wales."

The focus is to support Active Lifestyle Venues which will create new or improved sport and physical activity opportunities in Welsh communities through which mass participation can be achieved.

The money will be used to support low cost adaptations to existing indoor and outdoor facilities. Community buildings such as village halls and the natural doorstep environment have all moved to the fore and are set to become a hub of physical activity having been identified as key areas to benefit from the additional allocated funding.
