SIX NEW MEMBERS APPOINTED TO SPORTS COUNCIL FOR WALES

Alun Pugh, Minister for Culture, Welsh Language and Sport today [20 April 2006] announced the appointment of five new members to the Sports Council of Wales.
Following a rigorous public appointments process, Professor Laura McAllister, Reverend Hywel Meredydd, Mr Richard Palmer, Mr Robert Harris and Mrs Adele Baumgardt have been appointed as new Council members. Mrs Christine Gittoes have been re-elected for a further term.
Their three-year term began on April 1 2006 and their first official Council meeting takes place on May 8 2006 at the Welsh Institute for Sport in Cardiff.
Announcing the appointment, Sports Minister Alun Pugh said: "These six new members join the Sports Council for Wales at a very exciting period for sport in Wales. Team Wales have just returned from Melbourne with a good haul of medals and London is to host the 2012 Olympics, which will bring many benefits to Wales. The Sports Council is helping us drive forward our vision of a more active and successful sporting nation. I am confident that these new members, with their varied experiences and backgrounds, will have a great deal to contribute to the work of the Council over the next three years."
Philip Carling Chair of the Sports Council said: "I am delighted to be welcoming the five new members to the Sports Council for Wales and to welcome back Chris Gittoes for a further term. There is a wealth of valuable experience in the group and I know they will contribute massively to our work.
