PARALYMPIANS PREPARE FOR LANDMARK EVENT
10 May 2005
Ruthin born Anna moved to Chester in 1993 to do a degree in PE and Sports Science - then stayed to live and work in Chester. Anna runs her own business called ‘Awareness Matters’ which raises awareness to disability and also finds time to volunteer with the Air Training Corps at Ellesmere Port Squadron where she holds the rank of Warrant Officer.
Anna started her sporting career playing hockey for Buckley and Ruthin ladies but due to knee problems, which developed whilst still at school, was forced to give up the game, undeterred she made the move over to wheelchair basketball in 1997. The foundations of team work and ball control skills learnt in her hockey days are evident in her crossover to wheelchair basketball.
Just one year after joining a Chester based club Anna was invited to a GB open session in 1998 where she impressed so much she was asked to join the squad. Anna’s track record since has been impressive to say the least; she competed at 1998 World Champs in Sydney, the 1999 European Champs in Holland, won bronze in the Sydney 2000 Paralympics, was part of the 2002 World Champs squad in Japan, added more medals to her tally at the 2003 European Champs in Germany with a bronze.
The world cup this week ticks another year of GB squad selection for Anna and she is excited to get back on the court -
"I’m just really chuffed to be back in the Squad and can’t wait for the matches to start! I just need to pack my bags now!"
