SWIMMING GURUS TAKE TOP HONOURS AT WALES’ COACHING AWARDS

18 Nov 2004

Dave Haller with Gregor Tait and David DaviesSwimming today took top honours at the 2004 Sports Council for Wales Coach of the Year Awards.

Dave Haller – Head Coach at City of Cardiff Swim Club – was crowned Coach of the Year while Billy Pye – Wales’ national coach for disability swimming – received an award for outstanding achievement at a ceremony at the Welsh Institute of Sport, Cardiff.

Haller is the man responsible for cultivating the talents of David Davies who swam the race of his life this summer to claim Olympic bronze in the 1500m freestyle.

Davies explained, "My medal was as much Dave Haller’s as it was mine. He’s with me at every training session, getting up at 5am to be poolside. He’s a great motivator."

"We’re so lucky to have him here in Wales - his experience is second to none, his knowledge is superb and, more importantly, he's an understanding coach and a great person."

And those formerly under Haller’s wing include Mark Foster and Olympic champions David Wilkie and Duncan Goodhew.

Recently, Haller HQ has attracted Davies’ Olympic stablemate Gregor Tait, all the way from Edinburgh.
