21 Aug 2007
A record number of entries and a new sponsorship deal will provide extra reasons for celebration, when the Junior Welsh National Tennis Championships mark their 80th anniversary next week.
The tournament, to be held at the National Tennis Centre in Cardiff, from Monday August 27th, has attracted 244 entries from all over Wales in the singles competitions alone.
Tennis Wales, the national governing body for tennis in Wales, has also announced a new sponsorship deal with HSBC Bank covering the championships for the next three years.
"The sport continues to grow in competitor numbers and quality every year," said Tennis Wales chief executive officer Peter Hybart. "We have seen an 85% increase in entries since 2001, which shows the level of enthusiasm for tennis across Wales.
"I am delighted that to add to this progress, in HSBC Bank, we have now secured a sponsor who is committed to supporting the tournament for the next three years, and will help move the event to the next stage of its development.
"It’s a fitting way to mark the 80th anniversary of the championships, reflecting on the event’s heritage and looking with confidence to the future."
