SAM SCOTT SCOOPS DAILY TELEGRAPH AWARD
10 Oct 2007
Welsh athletics talent Sam Scott yesterday received the top accolade for the Excellence In Disabled Sport at the Daily Telegraph School Sports Awards.
The pupil from Adams Grammar School, Newport, Shropshire was recognised for his achievements which include smashing the junior world record in the shot-put at the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation Games in Glasgow last year. He also won gold medals at the UK School Games in 2006 and 2007. He is supported by Disability Sport Wales.
Meanwhile, Penyrheol Comprehensive School's Year 10 Football Team collected the award for the top school team in the UK.
In the summer of 2006, the Swansea community was devastated when the school was burned down by arsonists. The Year 10 football team gave Penyrheol something to be proud of, finishing last season as Welsh 11-a-side champions.
Wales also featured in the State School category with Whitchurch High School, Cardiff receiving a "highly commended" award, thanks to the number of outstanding individual and team successes in rugby (Welsh Under-16 and Under-18 champions), hockey, football, cycling, badminton, swimming and athletics.
