MINISTER STEPS BACK INTO THE PLAYGROUND TO TACKLE 5x60
10 Oct 2007
Twelve months from the inception of the Welsh Assembly Government’s innovative 5x60 programme, Rhodri Glyn Thomas - the minister responsible for sport - is stepping back into the playground to see how it is transforming the playing fields and sporting halls of secondary schools in north Wales into hubs of activity.
As part of a wider visit to North Wales, the minister called at the gym hall of Ysgol Syr Huw Owen in Caernarfon, where staff and 5x60 officers have been engaging pupils in their weekly quota of 60 minutes activity five times a week, through both PE lessons and extra-curricular activity.
The 5x60 programme, supported by a £7.6 million investment by the Welsh Assembly Government, was launched in October 2006 by Welsh Big Brother 7 stars Glyn Wise and Imogen Thomas and is aimed at getting secondary school pupils in Wales more active.
Now one year on, nearly 58 per cent of secondary schools in north Wales are aboard the programme. Wales-wide, a total of 125 secondary schools are participating in the drive to increase physical activity.
