Ethnic Minority Groups

All Sports Council for Wales programmes offer the opportunity for all communities to overcome the barriers affecting participation in sport and physical activity. These are magnified in areas where there are large ethnic minority communities, notably Newport, Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham.

Corporately, the Sports Council for Wales has put in place the Race Equality Scheme which is supported by a yearly action plan.

On the ground, officers’ are striving to create stronger links with ethnic minority communities through engagement, representation and communication. A number of initiatives have been taken including: ring fencing funds to enable targeted work to be undertaken in priority areas; establishing Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Sports Forums in Cardiff, Newport and Swansea to take a lead on developing new projects; and developing a football action plan for BME sport. The Sports Council for Wales will continue this proactive work and, in particular, will raise the profile of BME initiatives by promoting them in local minority ethnic publications and exploring innovative ways of working.
