"Only by taking advantage of such sporting opportunities at an early age can we ensure that we can continue to hone the talents of the future."

Only three Welsh golfers have captained Ryder Cup teams - the late Dai Rees, current incumbent, Ian Woosnam, and Huggett in 1977. The latter is regarded as one of the most successful Welsh golfers of all time and was a leading member of the bidding team which spearheaded the submission to bring The Ryder Cup to Wales in 2010.

And as Wales looks forward to welcoming the event to Newport’s Celtic Manor resort in four years time, youngsters across the country are embracing the revolution in the junior golf game as the Dragon Sport programme teams up with Golf Development Wales to bring golf to the masses.

The Dragon Sport programme is just one example of how the Sports Council for Wales is embracing the gauntlet laid down by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Health Challenge Wales drive - the national focus to secure greater ownership, commitment and action for better health, as part of a co-ordinated and sustained effort to improve levels of health in Wales.
