DOUBLE GAMES MEDALLIST DESCENDS ON NORTH WALES SCHOOL

17 May 2006

Six pupils were rewarded for their creative flair and their interpretation of the Games adorned the flags that the Welsh athletes proudly waved as they stepped into the Melbourne Cricket Ground at the opening ceremony of the XVIII Commonwealth Games.

David Phelps from Whitchurch, Cardiff secured gold in the individual 50m rifle prone and bronze in the 50m rifle prone pairs event at the Port Melbourne range in March. The 28 year-old was at Beaumaris Primary School to present Matthew with his winning flag design, which was seen by an estimated global television audience of one billion at the opening ceremony on the 15th of March 2006.

Matthew was also presented with a Melbourne 2006 goody bag and the school was presented with a t-shirt signed by the Commonwealth contingent.

Fielding questions a hoard of enthusiastic pupils, the Commonwealth Champion built up the buzz of the event and spoke of his pride at pulling on the red vest and shooting for the principality.
