SIX NEW MEMBERS APPOINTED TO SPORTS COUNCIL FOR WALES

Mr Richard Palmer CBE is from Llangwm, Pembrokeshire and is Executive Vice President of the British Olympic Association and a Director of the British Olympic Foundation. He currently lectures on MEMOS, a European Masters Degree programme in Sports Management. He is a board director of Sports Coach UK and Chairman of their Corporate Governance and Risk management Committee.

Dick Palmer has an extensive background in sports management, including Secretary General of the British Olympic Association, a position he held for 20 years until his retirement in 1997. He was Chef de Mission for the Winter and Summer Olympic Games of 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996. In addition, he was Chef de Mission of England’s Commonwealth Games Teams in 1972, 1982 and 1986. He was President of the Association of National Olympic Committees’ (ANOC) Commission for the Olympic Games and served on the ANOC Executive Board for 3 (4 yearly) terms. He was Vice President of the European Olympic Committee and remains an Honorary Vice President of the EOC. He was also a Member of the IOC’s Marketing Commission and serviced on the IOC’s Co-ordination Commission for the Games of Atlanta, Sydney and Athens and is co-author of the IOC Olympic Village Guide. He was also Technical Director of the London 2012 Olympic Bid and an advisor to the Commonwealth Games Federation for the Games of Kuala Lumpur, Manchester and Melbourne.

Christine Gittoes is from Port Talbot and now lives in Brecon. Chris has been working in the field of Health Promotion/Public Health for the past twenty years across mid and West Wales. She began her career in Health Promotion as a member of the Heartbeat Wales team in 1986 and is currently Health Promotion Manager for the Powys Local Public Health Team.

Chris was first appointed to Sports Council for Wales, Council in April 2000 and was subsequently reappointed for her second term in 2003. Following her second term coming to an end on 31st March 2006, Chris successfully re-applied through the public appointments process. She currently chairs the Sports Council for Wales Community Investment Panel and is Vice Chair of the Communication Panel.
