Gellifor Primary School was recently named 2003 Denbighshire Primary School Team of the Year for Football and Netball and teacher Sharon Davies was named Sunday Times
PE Teacher of the Year 2002.
The school throws its support behind the Sports Council for Wales’s Dragon Sport scheme which aims to get more primary school children playing extra-curricular sport than ever before.
The Minister added, "We’re seeing good statistics from Dragon Sport – after-school clubs are sprouting up right across Wales but we need more activity if we are to make an impact on the nation’s health. One of the key themes of Dragon Sport is to get Mums and Dads involved.
"Wales needs volunteers to step forward and help run after-school sports clubs. We’re calling on the real experts – parents. They have a wealth of natural skills to offer and by volunteering, parents can make sure they are getting enough exercise themselves."
The school is proactive in encouraging parents to get parents involved. Headteacher Roger Jones explains:
"We actively promote the concept of healthy family living in order to function happily and effectively in today’s society. As educationalists, it’s our duty to ensure that youngsters are taught to know how to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
"Luckily, many of our parents are aware of the positive outcomes of exercise and set a good example – children regularly arrive at school by bicycle accompanied by parents. Several Mums often set off on a run after dropping the children at school."
