CYFARTHFA HIGH SCHOOL WORKING TOWARDS A HEALTHIER GOAL
9 Aug 2007
Staff and pupils at Cyfarthfa High School in Merthyr Tydfil are set to experience an extra dimension in the way PE and physical activity is set to be delivered in the new school term.
Pupils and staff at the school have successfully secured a Community Chest grant to the tune of £607.55 from the Sports Council for Wales’ lottery pot to fund a health and fitness club after school on Friday afternoons.
The project has been developed to increase the availability of physical activity opportunities beyond the realms of competitive sport, with the ultimate aim of encouraging those who do not take part in sport to dust off their trainers and get active.
The health of children and young people across the nation is a key priority for the Sports Council for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government as part of the Climbing Higher strategy. The overriding challenge is to see all primary school children and 90% of secondary school children participating in at least 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week.
The grant will be used to purchase specialised equipment for circuit training and aerobic classes and to help fund a qualified fitness instructor who will kick start the project in the new autumn term by offering a number of free sessions to prospective participants. Once up and running, a fee of £1 per person will be levied to cover future costs.
The project will be open to pupils in years 10 to 13, members of staff, past pupils and staff from the school’s feeder primary schools.
Providing sport and physical activity opportunities for young people in Wales is now a higher priority than ever before. It plays a pivotal role in achieving a healthier Wales and providing sporting opportunities - be it on a competitive or purely recreational level at a young age - provides the textbook foundation for active lifestyles in adulthood.
