RHYS DAVIES TURNS PROFESSIONAL

12 Sep 2007

Rhys Davies announced today that he has both turned professional and signed with the global sports management company, IMG.

RHYS DAVIES PRESS SHOT 2Rhys, who won both his singles matches at last weekend’s Walker Cup match for GB And Ireland, turns professional after an extremely successful amateur career which saw him head to the States having won the 2003 British Boys Amateur Championship to hone his game at East Tennessee State University on a golf scholarship.

Rhys’ 50 tournament collegiate career included 10 wins, 20 top three and 30 top ten finishes. He played 149 rounds 89 of which were par or better with 48 rounds in the 60’s. His lowest round was 63. In his second year he beat Tiger Woods’ sophomore stroke average record, and in 2005-6 (his junior year) his stroke average was the best in the States.

Rhys, who qualified for the US Open this year, hopes to get his professional career off to a flying start when he heads to first stage European Tour Qualifying School at St Annes Old Links Golf Club in Lancashire next week

Rhys enthused, "I am really looking forward to getting out there next week. I have enjoyed every minute of my amateur career and I think between the competitions I have played here and the experience of playing four years of college golf, I have really prepared myself well for the Tour. I am delighted to be joining IMG as I think they will provide me with all the support and opportunities I need to allow me to focus on my golf."

Brendan Taylor, Vice President IMG Golf, whose clients include Nick Dougherty, Oliver Fisher and Paul Lawrie, will be Rhys’ manager, added, "Rhys has delivered consistently throughout his career so far and we are confident that he has a fantastic professional career ahead of him. Rhys was nicknamed ‘The Package’ at ETSU after his coach Fred Warren said "Rhys is not just a world-class player, but he’s a team player and a good leader," and I think that sums him up rather well."

Guy Kinnings, Managing Director, Golf (EAME, Australia), IMG, commented, "We are delighted that Rhys has chosen IMG to represent him. He is a very exciting prospect and we are delighted to be part of his team as he embarks on this new phase of his golf career."
