6 Mar 2008

The race for places in this year’s Junior Wales Open, sponsored by Coca-Cola and hosted by The Celtic Manor Resort, has once again underlined the event’s status as Wales’ premier national junior golfing tournament.

Within weeks of its launch, one qualifying venue has already been filled and only a limited number of places remain at three other qualifying venues around Wales.

The event tees off with a full field at Marriott St Pierre on March 28 and subsequent Easter holiday qualifiers are fast being booked out at Machynys Peninsula (April 1), Builth Wells (April 3) and Royal St David’s, Harlech (April 4). The closing date for entries is March 16.

In all, nearly 400 boys and girls will compete for coveted places in the final at The Celtic Manor Resort, venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup, on Wednesday August 20th. There, they will pit their skills against The Roman Road course which has hosted The Celtic Manor Wales Open, a professional event on the European Tour, for the last three years.

An entry fee of £9 per junior golfer includes the 18 holes of golf at the qualifier, a packed lunch and a Callaway Golf goody bag. Prizes for this year’s competition will be supplied by leading golf manufacturer, Callaway Golf, and the winners of each category will receive a trophy and the two overall winners (boy and girl) will win a trip to the Callaway Golf Performance Centre to be fitted for the latest model Callaway golf club.

Dylan Matthews, Tournament Director of The Celtic Manor Wales Open, said: "Last year’s event really highlighted theamount of talent already coming through the ranks of junior golf in Wales. The final was an excellent showcase for the next generation of Welsh golfers and this year’s event promises to provide an equally high standard of competition.

"With the Ryder Cup fast approaching, we are continually looking for ways to attract new and in particular, young spectators and participants to the sport. The Junior Wales Open has been key to this, as demonstrated by the high number of entries for the event."
