Where is the Information Centre located?

The Information Centre is situated in the Sports Council for Wales offices at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff.

What resources does it have?

The Centre houses a library of some 8,500 books, reports, conference proceedings and articles on sport and recreation. The main subject areas are:

  • Planning, design and construction of sports facilities;
  • Sports development - including sports provision for particular groups such as children, women and people with a disability;
  • Sports participation - surveys, statistics;
  • School sport and physical education;
  • Recreation management;
  • Finance and sport - sponsorship, fund raising, pricing;
  • Coaching;
  • Sports science and sports medicine - injuries, drugs, health, exercise, training methods, psychology, nutrition;
  • Countryside and water recreation.

The Information Centre receives more than 80 journals of which about half are permanently retained. Comprehensive data on built facilities for sport in Wales is stored in a database, whilst outdoor recreation sites can be viewed in a geographical information system. A file of press cuttings on sport is held and the Centre has a video/DVD library. Videos and DVDs are available for loan to sports clubs, schools and colleges; a list of titles can be supplied.

How can information be retrieved?

Access to the Information Centre's holdings is provided by a computerised bibliographic database. This allows the user to search by author or by subject using a keyword indexing system. In addition, the SPORT Discus database, containing over 600,000 international references on sport and fitness, is available for use on CD Rom.

What other services does the Centre provide?

Sports Council for Wales publications can be obtained from the Information Centre; a list is available on request. The Centre produces two current awareness bulletins. The Quarterly Bulletin of Publications on Sport and Physical Recreation lists recent books and journal articles and includes brief abstracts. SportsInfo appears three times a year and lists articles of interest to coaches and sports scientists. Photocopies of articles can be supplied subject to the Copyright Regulations.

The Centre operates the Coaching Resources Loan Scheme. This enables qualified coaches and sports scientists to borrow books on coaching, sports medicine, sports science, training methods, nutrition and sports psychology.
